I am an Associate Professor of Marketing at the Ivy College of Business at Iowa State University. I earned my bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Notre Dame, and my MBA and doctoral degrees in marketing from the University of Missouri.
For information on my textbook Marketing: Based on First Principles (with Robert Palmatier), see Bloomsbury Academic.
I conduct research in marketing strategy and business-to-business marketing, with a focus on accountability of relationship marketing strategies. My work in these areas can be found in outlets such as Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, MIS Quarterly, and Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science. My research leverages collaborative arrangements with firms in industries such as financial services and industrial distribution to highlight practical and actionable solutions to pervasive marketing problems. More recently, I have begun studying disruptive forces in the digital realm, including issues in the artificial intelligence, e-commerce, and livestreaming spaces.
I also have extensive experience in instruction and course development across topics in marketing, professional selling, channels of distribution, and operations management. I have developed online coursework and taught a variety of classes in both traditional and distance formats for diverse populations at multiple institutions. At Iowa State, I developed a unique and innovative course in Sales Enablement Tools, Technology, and Analytics. Inspired by the ongoing digital transformation of the business world, the course teaches future salespeople and sales managers the fundamentals of analytical intuition, data structure, and visual insights while laying a practical foundation of skills in Salesforce and CRM Analytics. I also developed a doctoral-level empirical modeling seminar, in which I taught methods necessary for modern quantitative research.
I live with my wife and four children in Ankeny, Iowa. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, playing board games, cooking, hiking, and traveling.
